Post Surgical Care

We offer a range of options, depending on the requirements of your horse, from stabling, to yard or paddock care.

Your horse will be under 24 hour veterinary supervision. We will liaise with your surgeon to ensure the best possible post surgical outcome for your horse.

Our aim is to help you and your horse in the transition from post surgery care to at home care. Our experienced veterinarians will help formulate a rehabilitation program tailored especially for your horse.

Injury Care

Our Injury Care service provides expert care at all levels. This service is perfectly suited to horses recovering from illness or injury. A comprehensive care and recovery plan will be discussed and implemented, allowing horse owners complete piece of mind.

We are able to provide expert care from medication administration, bandaging and controlled exercise.

From ailments as simple as a foot abscess or to a serious limb laceration in need of a dry stable and bandage changes, we can provide everything your horse requires.

We have highly experienced qualified vet nurses to assist with your horse’s care, as well as 24/7 Veterinary supervision.

Eye Injuries

Eye injuries can require intensive and time consuming care. Our experienced team can look after your horse and treat the eye injury, as many times in a day, as required.

With 24/7 veterinary supervision, the eye injury will be closely monitored and the progression of the healing will be discussed with your veterinary team.

Laminitis Treatment

Laminitis can be a very painful and devastating disease. We have extensive experience in dealing with laminitic cases and can provide expert care for your horse.

Working with our master farrier, or in conjunction with your farrier, we can work towards providing immediate relief for your horse/ pony.

We will then determine the underlying cause and work out the best management and farrier plan tailored to your horse, with the ultimate aim of preventing further episodes and maintaining soundness.

Lameness Evaluation

A lameness examination is performed to determine which limbs are involved, and the degree of lameness.

Sometimes a lameness issue is not immediately obvious, especially if bilateral or multiple limbs are involved. It may be that your horse is performing below expectations, starting to have behavioural issues or is just "not quite right". It is amazing how many horses continue to perform their day to day tasks with a degree of lameness that may not be immediately apparent.

Diagnostic tools that are frequently implemented in a lameness examination, include flexion tests, nerve and joint blocks, radiography and ultrasonography.

Lameness examinations can be done on site or at our custom built clinic, Elegria Park.

Reproduction Services

Elegria Equine Centre is the centre of EquiVets equine reproductive services.

Elegria Equine Centre is set up to accommodate both dry mares and mares with foals at foot in our safe and secure facilities, with paddocks, yards and stables all available. We offer shared or private paddocks, depending on your mares' requirements.

On-farm reproductive services are occasionally offered, providing a suitable horse crush is available to allow for the safety of your mare and the veterinarian.

Our veterinarians are experienced in natural cover, as well as fresh and frozen semen breeding and preparation of mares for the process of embryo transfer.

Poor Performance Management

Poor performance is a difficult area to address in our ridden horses and can vary from a racehorse not living up to its potential, the competition horse not achieving its previous level of performance or the pony club pony which has suddenly started to display undesirable behaviour.

The causes of poor performance are wide and variable, with the most common causes including  lameness, musculoskeletal and respiratory and cardiac conditions.

Other conditions that may contribute to poor performance include gastric ulcers, endocrine and hormonal disorders.

With experienced veterinarians, EquiVets can help figure out the cause of your horse's poor performance.

Pre-Purchase Examination

A pre-purchase examination is NOT a pass or fail examination. It is an examination to evaluate the health and soundness of the horse at the time of examination and is not a guarantee against future breakdown or problems. It should be considered an investment, as the purchase price of the horse is only the beginning and buying a horse that may not suit your purpose can be an expensive mistake.

A pre-purchase examination begins with a conversation with the potential buyer about their expectations of the horse and its potential use.  The examination is then tailored to best fit with the buyers expectations.  It starts with an  evaluation of the entire horse at rest. The heart, lungs, eyes, gastrointestinal tract, musculoskeletal system and overall body condition are evaluated. The horse is then evaluated on soft and hard surfaces, in both a straight line and on the lunge.. Flexion tests are then performed to evaluate each limb region separately. Depending on use, the horse may also be evaluated under saddle.

Radiographs are commonly performed. Other common tests, depending on future use, include endoscopy, ultrasonography, blood work, drug testing, breeding soundness and ECG.

Finally, anything abnormal or undesirable, found by the veterinarian, and the potential implications or management  of these, is discussed with the potential buyer.
